Latest Fed Survey Shows Credit Tightening for Everyone

If you thought that credit was becoming harder to get, you’re not imagining things. And if your credit card issuer recently cut your limit despite a pristine credit history, you’re not alone.

The Fed just released its October 2008 Senior Loan Officer Opinion Survey on Bank Lending Practices which showed that banks have been progressively tightening their lending standards and have now begun to cut credit limits on existing credit card accounts even for prime borrowers.

Sears-Kmart MasterCard to Offer Free Credit Scores

The WSJ reports that holders of the Sears-Kmart MasterCard will soon be able to see their TransUnion credit score for free. Existing cardholders are currently receiving notice in the mail of this new benefit.

To date, only Washington Mutual credit cards had offered this feature. It remains unclear, however, whether WaMu cards will continue to, in the wake of the merger with Chase. In any event, it’s good to see that HSBC, the issuer of the Sears-Kmart card, is picking up the ball. It will be interesting to see whether HSBC adds this feature to the other credit cards in its portfolio, since many of its cards cater to the audience segment most in need of monitoring their credit.

Bank of America Balance Transfer Offers: 0% APR for 15 Months

It’s a rare thing these days when a credit card issuer actually improves one of its balance transfer offers. So, it came as a bit of a surprise to see that Bank of America has just increased the intro period on balance transfers for several of its cards.

Previously, these cards had offered initial balance transfers of 0% for 12 months. Now, each of the following cards boast an excellent intro 0% for 15 months on balance transfers:

Discover to Remove Cap on Balance Transfer Fees

Discover will be removing both the minimum and maximum balance transfer fees on its consumer and business credit cards, effective November 1, 2008. Currently, balance transfers are assessed a fee of 3% with a $10 min and $75 max for consumer accounts. As of next month, all balance transfers will be subject to a flat 3% fee.

Discover seems to be following an industry-wide trend, as this move closely follows Chase’s decision to remove the balance transfer fee caps on nearly all of its cards. Discover and Chase join Citi, which also eliminated the max balance transfer ceiling on the vast majority of its cards earlier in the year. As credit tightens, we should probably expect more issuers to follow suit.

Discover Cash Over is Still Not Over

Discover Cash Over is an often overlooked but very useful feature that allows you to use your Discover card much like an ATM card at the grocery store checkout. When you use your Discover card at a participating supermarket, you can request additional cash at checkout, and it will be treated as a normal purchase with the same APR and grace period and no transaction fee. For those who pay off their balance every month, it’s a convenient way to save a trip to the ATM.

In the past, the program was even more attractive, since you used to be able to earn rewards on the cash you received. That was like getting free money. While most stores no longer give you rewards on your Cash Over, there are a few that still do.
