Huntington Voice Credit Card: 3% Cash Back on Category of Your Choice

Huntington Voice Credit CardThe Huntington Voice credit card, issued by Huntington Bank, isn’t the best cash back credit card on the market, but it’s still a nice card that deserves more attention. The Voiceâ„¢ card earns 3 points per dollar spent on a single category that you choose, on up to $2,000 in spending per quarter and 1 point per dollar on all your other purchases, with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees.

The 13 categories that cardmembers can choose from are:

  • Apparel/soft goods
  • Discount stores
  • Sporting goods
  • Gas
  • Wal-mart
  • Restaurants
  • Groceries
  • Department stores/electronics
  • Pharmacy
  • Home improvement
  • Travel and entertainment
  • Utilities
  • Office supply

Cardholders must select one of these categories before each quarter and can switch from quarter-to-quarter, depending upon what kind of spending they anticipate they will make.

Points can be redeemed for a variety of rewards, including a check or statement credit, once you’ve reached at least $20 in rewards (where 100 points can be redeemed for $1). So the card basically earns 3% in a single category of your choice and 1% on everything else.

Voice vs. the US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature card
On the surface, it seems then almost strictly worse than the US Bank Cash+ Visa Signature, which earns 5% cash back on your first $2,000 in purchases each quarter on two categories, and 2% in another “everyday” category like gas or groceries and 1% on everything else. And in most cases, the US Bank Cash+ card will be better.

But since the categories do not exactly overlap, the Voice card can fill some niche uses. For instance, earning 3% on either restaurants, home improvement or utilities may be quite attractive to some.

Not everyone can apply
One very important caveat applies: Huntington designed the card for its existing customers, and consequently, you must either already be an existing Huntington customer or reside within the bank’s footprint of Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, West Virginia, and Kentucky in order to apply.
