Win a Vacation for Two to Puerto Rico By Using Your PenFed Credit Card

Between now and December 15, 2006, each time you use your Pentagon Federal credit card, you’re automatically entered to win a vacation for two to Puerto Rico, valued at $3,000.

As a reminder, if you’re not already a cardholder, the PenFed Visa Platinum Cash Rewards is a great cash back card, earning a flat 1.25% cash back on all purchases. In addition, it’s useful for overseas travel, as it’s one of the few credit cards that does not add a currency exchange surcharge on top of the 1% that Visa/MC charge.

More details about the Puerto Rico sweepstakes can be found here.

Amex Launches New Starwood Business Credit Card

This tidbit comes from our friends at FT. American Express is now offering a business version of their popular SPG Amex. It looks to feature largely the same benefits as the personal card, namely a 10000 points signup bonus, and one Starpoint per dollar of spending which is doubled at participating Starwood properties. There are a couple of differences, however:

  • As part of the OPEN Savings Program, there are some discounts at select retailers such as AT&T, FedEx and Hertz
  • According to the linked thread from FT, as a business card, the Purchase protection has a lower per instance limit, but offers Primary CDW for rental cars in the US

As with the personal card, there is a $30 annual fee, which is waived for the first year. To apply, visit this link.

Edit: The terms for this offer may have changed. For the latest terms of the SPG business card or to apply, see this link.

No Balance Transfer Fee Within 30 Days of Chase Application?

A poster at FW is saying that many new Chase accounts actually have a 30 day period in which to make their initial balance transfer without paying a fee:

Chase just sent a memo to it’s credit supervisors telling them that some accounts that required a BT at the time of application to avoid BT fees, actually had a 30 day period in which to make a BT with no fees! Mine was one of them. So they must have had more complaints than just mine. So I moved 50% of that card’s cl to my interest bearing acct without any BT fees!. I think that the language on the application was very unclear and that is what caused all of this. SO if you got stuck paying a BT fee on a new account call Chase and see what they can do.

Sounds like this won’t apply to everyone, but the info may be useful for some rate surfers.

$100 Statement Credit For Citi Student Cards Referrals

This is a targetted offer, so unfortunately you’re out of luck if you didn’t receive the e-mail. According to this thread at FW, you might be solicited for this offer if you already have a Citi Student card. Basically, for each person you refer that applies and is approved for a Citi Card for College Students through the link provided in the e-mail, you’ll receive a $100 statement credit, up to a maximum of 5 approved accounts.

Your referrals must apply by October 31, 2006 to qualify.

Chase Launches New Freedom Card

Chase has begun test marketing a new credit card under the name of “Chase Freedom.” This name is sure to confuse existing Chase consumers, as it’s the same name that was used for the card that was converted into the existing Chase PerfectCard.

The latest edition of the Chase Freedom card has a set of features far more complicated (but better) than the existing PerfectCard:

  • 3% cash back on eligible Gas, Grocery store, and Quick Service Restaurant purchases; 1% cash back on all other purchases
  • Reach $50 in rewards and redeem for a $50 check; or reach $200 in rewards and redeem for $250 cash back.
  • The 3% cash back on eligible Gas, Grocery store and Quick Service Restaurant purchases is capped at $600 of spending per billing cycle; any excess in these categories is credited at 1%.
  • 0% Intro APR for 12 months for purchases and balance transfers

The type of establishment that qualifies as a Quick Service Restaurant could include “pizza, hamburgers, tacos and sandwich shops, coffee houses, and more…” but really depends upon how the merchant codes the transaction.
