Free LifeLock Subscription for 1 Year

According to Lifelock, their service provides a “basic layer of protection against identity theft” by attempting to detect when your personal information is being used to apply for new credit and alerting you when this happens. I have never used their service so I can’t endorse it, but they have given me 5 complimentary year-long memberships to give to new members (which would normally cost $110 each).

To give LifeLock a try using this promo, go to www.lifelock.com/enroll and enter Promo Code: NEWMEMBERCJ, Member ID: 477979. You will need to enter in all your personal information (including SSN), but it doesn’t appear that billing information is required. This offer is good until April 16, 2010 or all 5 memberships have been taken.

Schwab Visa to Stop Accepting New Applications?

According to a poster on CB, Schwab will stop accepting new applications for its Schwab Invest First Visa card after March 31.

Schwab has long since stopped marketing the credit card as it evaluates its profitability, so this news does not come as a great surprise. While existing cardholders are not supposed to be affected by this change, when a program stops accepting new customers, it’s not usually a good sign for its long-term viability.

Regulators Seize Advanta Bank

Advanta Bank, the small business credit card issuer, was closed by state and federal regulators on Friday, according to the FDIC. The bank had been a shell of its former self for quite some time, having initially announced in May 2009 that it planned to shut down credit card accounts and in July, agreeing to settle charges that it had engaged in “unfair and deceptive practices.” Its parent company, Advanta Corp, filed for bankruptcy protection in November, and since then has essentially reduced its operations to collecting outstanding balances on its accounts and making payments to its investors.

With the bank’s seizure, the main question for the 360,000 outstanding accounts owing $2.7 billion is whether they will have an easier time renegotiating their payments with the FDIC as their creditor. Customers with questions about the closure can call the FDIC toll-free at 1-800-537-4048.

Chase Freedom(SM): Now with 5% Rotating Rewards

The Chase Freedom(SM) rewards program is about to become a lot more like Discover More‘s. Chase recently announced that its Chase Freedom(SM) rewards program will be undergoing yet another makeover, to provide a “simple, straightforward way to earn 5% cash back in popular seasonal categories.”

Effective April 1, 2010, customers will be eligible to earn 5 percent cash back on the most popular spending categories, like dining, drug stores and grocery stores, through seasonal promotions. Other purchases would continue earning a 1% rebate. Gone, however, is the $50 bonus for redeeming $200 in rewards at once. And much like Discover’s program, cardholders will have to sign up for the quarterly promotions and are limited to how much spending will earn the 5%.

Beginning March 15, 2010, Chase Freedom(SM) cardholders can enroll in second quarter promotions for a 5% rebate at home improvement stores, lawn and garden outlets, home furnishing retailers and drugstores.
