Discover it Miles Card: Earn 3 Miles Per Dollar on All Purchases For The First Year
Over the past couple of years, Discover has simplified its product line, discontinuing several cards and rather single-mindedly promoting its general purpose Discover it cash rebate card. Now, it appears that Discover has decided that it is the right time to introduce a new card to the competitive travel market. The new Discover it Miles card earns an unlimited 1.5 miles on all purchases, which in itself is nothing special. What makes the card potentially attractive is that for the first year, all of your earned miles will be doubled, meaning that you’ll earn 3 miles per dollar on all your purchases.
With one Discover Mile being worth one cent, this means is that the card is essentially a 1.5% cash back card, or 3% back for the first year. It is important to note, though, that you’ll only receive the doubled miles at the end of the first year.
Redeeming your Miles
Miles can be redeemed either as a credit to your account for travel purchases made within the past 180 or as an electronic deposit to your bank account. You can redeem either online at Discover.com or by calling 1-800-347-3085. There is no minimum redemption amount and no caps on the number of miles you can earn.
Discover it Miles Benefits
Other benefits of the card include:
- 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases
- An annual credit up to $30 for in-flight Wi-Fi purchases
- No annual fee
Also, as with all Discover credit cards, there are no foreign transaction fees. Internationally, Discover is accepted anywhere China Union Pay, JCB and Diners Club are accepted. Discover it Miles cardmembers also get access to their FICO credit score for free through monthly statements, the mobile app or online account.
Discover is also well-regarded for their 100% US-based customer service, which topped the latest JD Power customer satisfaction ratings along with American Express.
Bottom line
If you think about the Discover it Miles card as a 1.5% cash back card with no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees, it’s a pretty solid credit card pick. Since the double miles for the first year essentially is your signup bonus, this offer is best for those who can spend a lot during that first year. For instance, if you spend $30,000 during the first year, the double miles bonus is worth $450. On the other hand, spending $6,667 during your first year would be equivalent to a $100 signup bonus.
