Credit card companies are aggressively pursuing new customers once again, mailing out 29% more offers as compared to the first quarter a year ago. Are those offers on the whole as rewarding as we’ve seen in the past? Sadly, the answer is no. Still, many of them do represent an improvement over what we’ve been used to for the past year. Citi has just introduced a brand new promotion for its Citi Platinum Select Mastercard, offering an 0% intro APR for 21 months on balance transfers and 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases. Both the rate and length of your introductory offer will be based on your creditworthiness. If you’re looking to take advantage of the balance transfer offer, there is a 3% uncapped balance transfer fee with a $5 min. The card has no annual fee.

Citi is currently offering up to 35,000 bonus miles on its American Airlines co-branded credit cards, including the Citi Platinum Select / AAdvantage Visa Signature card, Citi Select / AAdvantage American Express and CitiBusiness / AAdvantage Visa card. Under this promo, you’ll be awarded 30,000 AA miles after spending $750 within 4 months of signing up and another 5,000 bonus miles if you make at least $5,000 in purchases during your first year.
In addition, if you sign up using this link, the annual fee will be waived for the first year.
Chase has now even further sweetened its United Mileage Plus Visa sign up bonus, offering 50,000 Mileage Plus miles after you make qualifying transactions totaling $250 or more. The annual fee of $60 is also waived for the first year under this offer.
There doesn’t appear to be a link to the online application, though you can read some of the terms here. Note that this promotion is only available to first-time cardholders with new accounts.
To apply, you’ll need to call Mileage Plus customer service (1-800-421-4655). Choose the “apply for a UA Mileage Plus credit card” option to be transferred to Chase. The Chase CSR will then be able to help you with this 50k bonus deal. (Via FT)
Late last year, Pentagon Federal introduced its Premium Travel Rewards Amex. At the time it appeared most noteworthy because it made PenFed the first credit union to issue an Amex-branded credit card. Upon closer inspection, however, it appears that the credit card merits some serious attention, particularly for those who fly a lot.
Big Signup Bonus
Deal hounds will immediately appreciate the card’s generous signup bonus. It offers 20,000 bonus points when you spend $650 within the first 3 months, enough for a roundtrip airfare ticket or a $200 gift card. But, digging deeper, we see that the card is not just another churning opportunity.

The standard offer for the United Visa has been for 30,000 bonus Mileage Plus miles after spending $250 with your new card, but with a $60 annual fee. Using the following link (via FTG) will also earn you the 30,000 miles after spending $250, but with the annual fee waived for the first year. Beyond the initial signup bonus, though, the card itself is not particularly exciting, as it earns just 1 mile per $1 in purchases.
The Virgin Atlantic American Express now offers up to 65,000 bonus miles in your first year of cardmembership. The new, improved offer is only available through this link, as the standard deal only offers up to 35,000 bonus miles.
Under terms of the new promotion, you’ll earn 20,000 Flying Club miles after your first purchase. You’ll also receive an additional 25,000 bonus miles after you make at least $750 in purchases within 90 days of opening your account. In addition, you’ll earn 7,500 Flying Club miles for spending $15,000 and another 7,500 miles for reaching $25,000 in annual spending. Up to 5,000 more bonus miles may be earned for adding more Cardmembers to your account.

There’s a few days left on this special deal for the Frontier World MasterCard with Annual Fee. Until November 15, 2009, when you open a new account and pay your annual fee of $49, you’ll receive 20,000 bonus miles. If you spend at least $750 by February 28, 2010, you’ll receive another 20,000 for a total of 40,000 bonus miles, which is enough for 2 round-trip tickets.
In addition, there is an intro balance transfer offer of 0% for 6 months. If you initiate the transfer within the first 6 months of opening your account, there is a min fee of $5 and a max of $50. In addition, you can earn 1 bonus mile for each balance transfer dollar that posts in the first 30 days after your new account is opened up to a maximum of 10,000 miles.
Chase and British Airways just announced that the British Airways Visa will be offering an unheard of 100,000 mile signup bonus: 50,000 BA Miles after first purchase, and 50,000 more BA miles after spending $2,000 on the card within three months. That’s enough miles for two round-trip transatlantic flights.

Your first purchase with the Chase Sapphire(SM) card earns you 10,000 points, which can be redeemed for a $100 statement credit or cash. Alternatively, you can redeem the points in Chase’s Ultimate Rewards program for gift cards, travel, and more. After the initial bonus, the card earns 1 point per dollar, which makes it an ordinary 1% rewards card. There is no annual fee.
